grass bed fishing the tidal potomac...what line to use for what

Featured Replies

Obviously I'm using braid for frogs but for buzzbaits, senkos, punching mats, etc...

As of now I have floro and braid for my senkos, braid for frogs and mono for my buzzbaits. These are the three main things I been throwing since I just started fishing out there. What brand and lb test is everyone who's having success using and plz be specific for each application.

Right now my current setup is 4 baitcasters, all daiwa: Sol(braid), Fuego(braid), Zillion crazy cranker(floro) 4.9:1 , zillion 7.3:1(braid) , 2 tierra spinning 3000's(mono) and a Daiwa TD pro 3000 (braid) also. Using fairly heavy rods(m-mh-h) all the way around with the exception of my crucial drop shot rod that I throw senkos in the grass with sometimes. I had been using 10 pound braid on that senko setup and wondering if the visibility of it is spookin fish. So now Im gonna start throwing senkos with my crankbait reel since it has 15 pound floro on it already. Would floro be the norm for throwing weightless plastics in grass ?

I don't think that fish see the braid and I haven't had any problems catching fish on braid with soft plastics on the Potomac.  With that said, here's what I use on my setups:

Frogs/Buzzbaits - 50lb Power Pro

Swim Jigs - 50lb Berkley Fireline Braid (casts lighter baits better than Power Pro IMO)

Flipping #1 - 20lb Berkley Pro Flouro (moderate to heavy cover)

Flipping #2 - 65lb Power Pro (nasty stuff)

Spinnerbaits - 12lb Izorline XXX Copoly

Senkos - 15lb Izorline XXX Copoly

Shallow Cranks - 12lb Berkley Big Game

Lipless Cranks - 12lb Izorline XXX Copoly

When fishing grassbeds on the Stank, I'll typically have 3 rods that I fish with on a regular basis. First and most-used is 7'6"H flipping stick. In the summer I'll keep it spooled with 50lb Spiderwire and use it for plastic frogs and punching mats. I'll bring a spare reel spooled w/17 or 20lb Trilene Maxx monofilament for flipping/pitching around wood, docks, etc. Flourocarbon is nice, but in my opinion not worth the $20+ price for a filler spool. Maxx is a relatively higher diameter mono, but it handles well and has decent sensitivity, plus I can get a 330 yd spool for nine bucks. I'll also have a 7'M cranking stick with 14lb mono for shallow-running crankbaits and topwaters, as well as a 7'M spinning rod with 8 or 10lb mono for senkos and finnese stuff. I'll usually bring a spare spool filled with 14lb Fireline for the spinning rod for fishing in super-thick grass and for sensitivity on longer casts. Occasionally I'll use a shorter baitcaster for pitching spinnerbaits or skipping under docks, but most of the time its the first 3 setups that get the most use.
