Its been cooler than usual this time of the year. what does this do for the fishing? fish in more shallow waters?

I don't know how much it has affected the water temperature. That would be more of a determinant than air temp. It's definitely been nice though.

The temperatures haven't changed the bass locations or catching. The windy conditions have had the most affect with presentations though.

I just got back from a trip but yeah it is COLD here now!  When I left a week or so ago I could barely breath it was so hot and now I need long sleeves.

For what it is worth....water takes FOREVER to change temp.  Try boiling water versus boiling soda, grease, or milk.  (My Biology degree in action)

A week or two of cooler temps wont change a large body of water.  But it sure does make it more comfortable to fish  ;D

I don't know about "forever"...the Potomac at Little Falls dropped 8 degrees since this time last week. That's a pretty significant drop.

I know that feeling! That's why I wait until late May before I start wading...once in early May was enough for me.

A "NOVA" Weather Report:

Cars are backed up all over the place as the sun rises.  Traffic lights are not in sequence and breakdowns are all over the place, blocking streets and roads.

Road congestion caused by slow VDOT contract workers adds to the confusion on the inner loop of the beltway from I-95 to the American Legion Bridge.

Tonight it will be dark and most of the DC drivers, especially the ones without any auto insurance, will be driving without their headlights on.

It will be another "Four F" Friday Night in the DC area, so be aware.  :)

Haha Sam that's pretty much the most accurate weather report I've ever heard. I live on Gallows rd next to the beltway and it takes me 10 minutes to drive to the gas station 200 yards down the road. They have been digging up the street every afternoon for the last 2 years with no noticable progress. VDOT = full of failure ::)

I live up the street in Falls Church close to where Lee Hwy and Rt. 7 intersect. I know the construction that you are talking about. It seems the state has decided to perform construction on all beltway overpasses at once. It's easy to get angry at them for taking so long but remember how restricted they must be. If they could work for a solid few weeks on a road that was completely closed then I would imagine they would get a lot more work done. As it is, they have to contend with traffic so I'm sure they are going slower than they really could.

Yea, I live by that Church Corpus Christi (?) in Falls Church...traffic is HORRIBLE.

down by Bailey's Crossroads?

I'm repeatedly amazed by what is considered "Falls Church" nowadays. Depending on who you ask the population for "Falls Church" could be 11,000 or 50-60k

Water temperature has dropped 10 degrees in the past two weeks. On the Potomac this has caused the baitfish to move into the creeks--they are there in the millions. Today there were numerous patches of water that were literally bubbling and hissing from the large schools of baitfish present. Caught 20 keepers, largest five weighed at least 15lbs--including one that went 6-7lbs. If you can put up with all the boat traffic, now is the time to be out there.

Wayne- is there any good spots from the shore to fish at hunting run? I was there thursday for about an hour. I was on the dock and thought there might be some bass there due to the brush under the water. There was not one bite. Was throwing a watermelon/ chart zoom finesse

I don't shore fish so I can't advise you of any places. The depth I have been catching them is around 8' at the outside edge of the submerged weeds.

  • 3 weeks later...

It hasn't been cool around here, its usually hot for this time of year avg of about 82-85 peaking into the 90s should be around 50-mid 60s been praying for cool weather for fishing tried of hot weather.

I wouldn't really put all the blame on VDot most of it goes toward the Gov for cutting funds, in turn Vdot is highing (if I understand it right) contractors which took over a lot of the areas Vdot use to work and there doing a horrible job and most of the Vdot workers have and are being laid off.
