Potomac River Identity Crisis!

Featured Replies

Went fishing last night on the Potomac off of the shore at Aquia Landing and saw a strange fish.

I didn't see its full body, nor did I see it long enough to get a camera out and take pictures. Here is my description;

it was burried in the weeds, and BRIGHT orange, i only saw its back and tail portion, but I would estimate the fish being about 2 feet long, at the most. It almost looked like a koi fish, but in the wild? And the potomac's brackish waters?

HELP!

yeah, probably a koi or koi/carp mix. I've never seen one in the river but I've seen them in plenty of other places and it wouldn't surprise me to see them in the P'mac

Yeah there are tons of goldfish/koi/carp hybrids in the river, people will intentionally release them and i've also seen ospreys carry fish off from backyard ponds and accidentally drop them in the river too

You saw one of the Koi's.

For some reason, they do well in Aquia Creek.

I would have thought the larger fish would have had them for dinner.  :)

It was a MONSTER koi though. Like I said, probably 2 feet. How do you catch these guys? or do you not catch them?

If you catch one I am sure it would put up one hell of a fight but I have no idea how to get one to bite.  In the winter you will see them stacked up near warm water discharges.  I have seen them so thick that I could walk over them in Blue Plains and Four Mile.

yeah, they get really, really big. You might be able to catch some on bread. I caught a couple koi/carp hybrids on bread before.
