A friend of mine and I are renting a jonboat/motor at EHP on Friday.

Any advice on what to throw? What do those canal bass like?

I realize that the water in the canals is still high but this is the day we have to fish so we are fishing!

When I fished another set of canals in February, we did not catch any Peacocks and a lot of the guys had not either due to the cold. I know they lost some in that freeze.

I am hoping that warmer temps will bring some out....I

you might want to hit sawgrass instead. I know they have been biting there the last few weeks. They rent boats too. its just up the road from HP.

I'd have the usual senko and plastic worms rigged either texas or wacky. This time of the year I prefer a wacky Garry Yamamoto 5" senko. Try a Pop "R", working as slow as you patience will allow for major hookups.

A second vote for Sawgrass.  Go east from the dock. I took my nephew out there on Sunday.  He caught a dozen on a Senko type bait.  I threw lots of things but mostly got bit on a small chug bug, texas worm... and then a paddle tail plastic about noon.  Fishing got better later in the day.

The paper says a tournament was won at Holiday Park last weekend with just 8 lbs.  I think you are better off at Sawgrass

x3 on sawgrass for numbers of fish caught. the only problem you will have going to hp, is the good bite is on the alley. that is a good haul in those little rental boats. if you do go to hp, go up the center canal past the 4 corner intersection about 1/4 mile west. throw watermelon flukes behind the pads and work them out. also throw your favorite topwater soft plastic as well.

if that bite is slow/not on, keep heading west to the miami canal which is at the end of the center canal. go right (north) about a mile and start fishing with a giggy or your preference shakey head type jig with a black trick worm. you will catch fish. they might not be big, but you will catch fish. good luck.

We fished Sawgrass in late February so we wanted to try another spot but ya never know, we may change our minds!

I fished the N/S Miami Canal that Bocabasser is talking about on Saturday.  I can confirm what he posted...there is a lot of fish there, but not much for size. 

I brought my six year old daughter out there on Saturday.  That is the perfect place to go with her...alot of wildlife and a ton of small bass. You get a lot of action there which is essential for keeping a six year old's interest level up. 

You can get into some bigger fish, running west through the weir (careful...shallow) and working frogs/worms along the E/W canals there.

So, how did the day go on Friday?

I went over there last weekend and it was horrible. Lot of people running jet sky, huge saltwater boats making waves.

If you want to catch bass over 8 and 10 pounds go to Lake El Salto you will never regret it is worth every penny, just make sure to use 17 to 20 pound test line because those fishes fight like a saltwater fish and there is a lot of trees under water.
