Tips for Fountainhead

Featured Replies

Been lurking on the fourms for a week and placed my first order with Northstar!  What what i've read on here they are quality jigs.  I've used other jigs and the skirt part always falls apart over time so hopefully these will last me some time.  I've been bass fishing since I was 8 and love it :)

I plan on going out to fountainhead in the morning and need some pointers.  I just bought my first Sonar (humminbird 570 portable) and will be testing it out tomorrow ;).  Any pointers on where to go?  Towards the dam or upstream?  Should I just fish points and drop offs? Any tips would be great!

Thanks,

Eddie

Welcome aboard! You may want to pick up a map at the marina. Very helpful. You can never go wrong fishing points. Experiment until you figure something out. Let us know how you do.

Will pick up a map when I get there tomorrow. Been off this whole week and been fishing just about everyday. I went out to fountainhead monday with my dad and sister and only managed to catch two on point. Was covering the whole rightside by the old dam and caught nothing. It was great going out fishing with my dad as we have not gone together in a while.

I'll see what I can manage tomorrow now that I have the depth finder.  I would like to go with someone that has more experiance on the rez though.  I don't bite :)

sweet. always fun to fish w/ pops. Check out the old dam w/ the electronics. a lot of stuff to fish over there! good luck!

I haven't gone all the way to the dam yet.  I'm affraid that my battery on my trolling motor will die by the time I get there....or do you think i'm just a wuss? lol

Maybe I can drift half way there covering areas and then make a run to the dam.?

Not sure we are talking about the same spot. Ryan's dam is to the right towards the occoquan and bull run. it's very close the the marina. trolling motor would not be a problem.

ah, missed the part when you said "old dam".  I can try heading toward Bull Run again but I got skunked last time I ran towards Bull Run..but now that I have the depth finder it may pay off.  Theres this point straight ahead of the marina that I caught a pig but somehow managed to lose my jig and fish :(  It's always the big ones that get away but at least I know they are out there.

Man, you be forever staying on the forums..lol

fountain head has been tough for me the last few times I have gone...not sure what is going on.  Let us know how you do.

a buddy and i did ok the other day. we had 11 fish, but no real size. all of our fish were super shallow. we tried deep too but no luck.

Yeah, I've picked up some small ones as well.  Nothing to write about.

I ended up skipping the AM run out...my bed kept me in ;D

But I ended up going later at around 2:30 with my buddy which I had to teach out to fish for bass.  Covered points and wood structure on the left from the ramp and nothing.  Then headed toward the grass straight ahead of the marina and caught a few dinks off jigs and plastics.  They were caught in about 6ft deep all off the bottem.  We then made a run to the old dam and caught some more but no pigs.  There were two other boats catching them deep by the dam.  It was hot as hell out there but a good day.

The 570PT is a great tool, now I know what spots will hold fish:)

Is the 570 really portable?  What does it run on?  How is the resolution?

I know this is a lot of questions, but my never ending search for a quality fish finder for my inflatable continues.

I was fishing at Fountainhead by 0645 yesterday morning. We fished until about 1300, with hardly any luck. I caught one LM (about 1 lb. 4 oz) on a buzzbait. That was it! I couldn't believe it. We threw jarkbaits, cranks (deep/shallow), senkos, jigs, flukes just about everything that I could think of and in every fricken color.

We fished all the structure that you were talking about to the left of the marina and back in a few fingers of the reservoir. I don't know what the heck happened to all the fish. Too hot I suppose.

Yesterday put a huge damper on the pride, I haven't gotten my butt kicked in a while. At the same time, I wanna go back ASAP to kick some fish butt.

Bigbarge50-  The 570PT is portable.  They make a 570 but the 570PT has a weatherproof case with a 12v gel-cell battery at 640x320 resolution.  Shoot me a PM and I can bring it out if you want to meet up sometime.  The transducer mouting is by suction cup and has a quick disconnet on the mouting plate.  The battery will run for up to 24hrs.

Pikes, it was very hot yesterday and water temps were very warm.  I saw a lot of suspended fish and most were caught deep on points and trees pointing out of the water.

I've fished fountainhead twice in the last 1.5months and had very little luck.  I've spent most of my time searching for big ones, so i dont fish the points or shallows too much.

I picked up a lot of fish on my portable hawkeye if you go past the dam on the opposite side.  the map shows 3 beds about 30ft deep.  i went up and down at least twice but couldn't get anything to bite, but maybe someone else will have better luck.
