goin to cape haterras in a few weeks lookin for info

Featured Replies

ok se we are getting a beach house known as the green herron off of mile marker #19 for a week in mid september(19th i think) so my question is, how good is the surf fishing in this area, and what species can be caught? i'll be bringing a bunch of gear, but my problem is baits.  i know the basic baits, such as blood worms and squid, from my croaker fishing days, but im looking to catch some flounder if at all possible maybe some drum or something.  i'll be fishing from the beach, mostly nights i think, i was told nights were a good time.   i realize my timing may be bad, or good with the dates we're coming down.  any and all info would be appreciated

surf fishing is great in that area. i used to go to the outer banks every summer to surf. last summer i went and these guys staying in the house next to ours fished everymorning and crushed redfish, croakers and several other species. i didn't have time to fish, because i surfed all day.

I fish down there every summer. I like to use Gulp swim grubs (3 or 4" white or silver). I put them on a jig head. Then I usually wade out so I can cast into the gully between the sandbar and beach. For "active" swimming fish (trout, drum), I swim the bait in. For flounder, let it hit the bottom, then wait. When you can't stand waiting any longer, reel it in a bit. Then let it drop. As far as I can tell, flounder have to be 15" or better to keep. You now also need a NC fishing license for the ocean.

what size jig head, line? medium heavy or heavy action rod i'd imagine.  i've got an 8 foot medheavy spinning rod that i've used a number of times for croaker would that be a good choice for drum???  i like gulp for my bass, and didnt even think about their saltwater plastics good stuff.

I use 3/16" jig head so the curly tail really "flutters" when it drops slowly to the bottom. I have two salt-water capable reels (a Cabelas one and a nice Shimano Curado). I use 17lb fluoro with a 7' casting stick (I prefer medium). Nothing really fancy, but it gets the job done! I've never hooked anything off the beach that's come close to spooling me (but I invite them to try!).
