Help a Central Florida Newbie

Featured Replies

I have not been down in Florida long and definately have the BASS bug. Where I came from the lakes freeze over and snow is on the ground 5 months a year.

Now that the air and water temperatures are dropping from the 70's 2 weeks ago and now down into the 60's. Do the fish just shut down? Do they shut down for a short period of "shock" then get active again?

What are some techniques to try when the water temperature drops? What are your go to lures when the water temps cool? Do the fish stick close to the pads and reeds or do they move deeper?

I am trying to learn and any help is greatly appreciated.

They'll get active again.  Florida bass are notorious for shutting down when a cold front arrives.  After a day or two of stable weather, they'll be biting again.  As far as techniques go, I don't really change up what I do.  A lot of the times is just a matter of changing location.  Sometimes the bass will go deeper if they have it available.  In other lakes they'll pull in tighter to cover.

I don't know anybody who's done real well under these conditions. The winning weights at the local tourneys this weekend was pathetic. My water temp has dropped from 74 to 54 since last Monday. Thats a 20 degree drop in one week! These sissy Florida bass got lockjaw right now.
