Winter time in NC

Featured Replies

I am wondering what people who live in NC do during the winter for fishing. I want to try and get out more often in the winter and try and catch more fish, but I don't know where to go and what to do. I am near the Piedmont section of NC but travel east alot during the summer.

Hey man,

I live in Greensboro NC, but go to school in Chapel Hill so I spend a portion of the year there. I know a lot of good ponds in Greensboro and unless it is cold enough to freeze, most ponds and local neighborhood lakes are pretty good options. If you own a boat, most of the lakes in or around Greensboro stay open even during December, January and February. They do cut their hours short though...

During winter time, I have mostly concentrated on Crappie and fished for them 95% of the time. If you can get on them, you can make them bite. When you get them going on an Ultra Light rod, you can have a lot of fun. It's not bass fishing but it is certainly fun.

The only day I did go bass fishing I ended up hooking up with a pretty nice fish during my second or third cast. So, if you want to go that way, you can still make them bite. It's just harder of course.

I live in Raleigh and used to fish all winter but it gets pretty tough (for bass) when the water temps get in the upper thirties and low forties. Most of the guys I know either fish for crappie or stay by the fire in January and February.

If you can stand the weather (I can't!) and have good sonar, use jigging spoons and you can catch a bunch of fish.  The action can be hot and heavy though you may have to fish as deep as 55-60 ft in some Piedmont lakes.  Alternatively, there are lots of power generating lakes here in Piedmont NC that have warm water discharges.  Regardless of the season or the water temp, find the baitfish - find the bass.
