My church is way out in the country. There is a cotton gin right across the road.  After they gin the cotton,  they blow all of the remains of it out of this long pipe, which blows right onto everyones clothes,  makes everyones' cars dirty, and by winter, our parking lot is just covered in the stuff.  Also, this stuff really smells bad, and to top it off, they set the huge pile( 20 ft high+) on fire which really makes it stink.  The situation has really been bothering everyone in our church for the past few years.  Is this breaking some law or anything.  I'll post pics  within the next couple days.

Thanks

Was the gin or the church there first? That might not even matter, but it's good to know.

Our church was once a house, the house was there before the gin.  But the gin was there before the house was converted into our church.  But here's the thing: their stuff is getting on our land, we don't want it there.  also, i'm sure it's gotta be violating some sort of health code or something, their's a small neighborhood around it(mostly workers of the gin) and I don't know how they breathe with that stuff around all of the time.

There's another gin in town that does the same thing, only they have a silo  that contains all of the ginned cotton.

You can go there with a just cleaned vehicle, open your door for 2 seconds and.... Clean car no more!  It looks like it's snowing over there.

Like I said i'll have pics sometime this week,

if their junk is blowing on your properity, then that is (atleast around here) against the law.

yeah, i would imagine that you should be able to get them to fix the problem.

Who would I contact to solve the problem?

I doubt that the dust and sediment will merit any legal actions.      How many of you can get your neighbors to clean up the leaves that are in your yards, when you don't have a single tree.

Most towns have zoneing laws that pertain to city limits.    Most counties will have zoneing laws for outside city limits.

I bet that the gin is protected by the zoneing law.

Being from small farming towns, I have been in areas that do gin cotton and have also hated the dust that comes from gins.

I have also seen when farmers didn't plant seasonal crops for that year for some reason, and the 1000's of acres with nothing in seed made baron lands and major dust storms with nothing in seed.

Didn't matter either way, no crops planted, very dusty on windy days, gin running, very dusty.

Matt.

It's not just dust or anything, this is big lumps of cotton, the stuff get's in our church in our cars everywhere.  You can't walk through the parking lot without coughing half to death.

that sounds like something could def be done about it. i would bring it up at a county board meeting or soemthing. have you thought about going and confronting the cotton people?

hope it works out for you

good luck

Go to your local government, if that doesn't work, try a lawyer.
