Deer season?

Featured Replies

HI, I am new to the site. I was wondering what everybody shot during deer season.

First and foremost, welcome to the greatest site on the web!

I've killed a couple of 8-pointers (one right descent one :) and one mistake :-[) and a really wide 6-pointer (another mistake >:().  I'm trying to "trophy" hunt, but I'm new at it and have made a few mistakes this year.  Yesterday I went after a couple of does for meat, but accidently shot a button-buck along with an older doe.  (The button-buck was yet another mistake :'().  But, I've had a good time learning from all of my mistakes ;D.

What have you killed?

Welcome to the site. It's great to have you here. I've managed to shoot 6 does this year. I am a meat hunter first so they were all young and tender. I didn't see anything with big enough antlers this year to take but I still have a week left in the season so we will see.

Preach,

The best thing I have ever bought for trophy hunting is a good pair of binoculars and one of the cross the back straps for it. I no longer make mistakes when it comes to identification. By the way I hunt some of the thickest crap you will ever see down here in GA and the binoculars help penitrate into it.

Fluke,

Thanks for the advice.  I am using a friend's Zeiss binoculars with a shoulder strap, and they work great.  I'm just not a mature enough hunter to not shoot a buck that has antlers outside of his ears :)  I'm not good at aging them yet, but I've learned some important lessons from my mistakes, and I have some good, helpful, very successful friends that are schooling me.  You're right about the binocs, they're the most important piece of equipment I take with me.  I'd rather take them and leave my rifle at home.  At least I'd see something!

That's a great deer. He looks pretty old to. I wish we could grow them that big down here in Georgia without having to spend thousands of dollars on feed and foodplots for them. Congrats.

only thing i shot this year was a button buck last weekend during muzzle loader season.  150 yards at a good pace, not quite a dead run.  I was lucky to hit him at all.

:)Nice rack on that 10 pointer!  We have plentiful whitetail in Western North Carolina but our deer don't get very big.  Too much hunting pressure for them to get over 6-8 points generally also.

Merry Christmas to everyone!
