Home heating problem- Help!

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I know that several you around here are HVAC tech's and I need some help. After the recent cold front, I was reminded of a problem that I was encoutering last winter. We have a late 70's model Lennox gas furnace. The pilot light was going out every few days late last winter and I thought nothing of it (wind or something). I lit it last night and it went out before morning. Can any of you guys offer me some advice? I'd rather save some $$ and do this myself if possible.

Thanks,

Fisher

It's been a long, long time since I did any HVAC, but I'd say replace the thermocouple first. If that doesn't do it, call a qualified tech.

Cheers,

I think ghoti is right on the mark here.  When they start to go bad they will not stay lit for very long.

Thanks guys.  I'm going to try and replace the thermocouple.  Can I get one at Lowe's, etc, or other hardware stores?

Lowe's, Home Depot, might have the one you're looking for.  If not, your local heating and cooling buisness will have one but it will be a little more costly most times.

Not trying to insult your intel.   Do you know what it looks like?  Very easy to replace.

None taken, Matt. Long copper thingy with a wrenchy attachy thingamajig on either end. ;D Seriously, I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I've just never done much to my home heater (except clean out the condenser coils on the A/C side).

Agreed. Very easy to replace. As soon as I can buy some time (hopefully Saturday) I'll replace it. Five minute job.

Thanks guys for all your help.
