Native American Artifact Dating

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where I can find a good book on dating Native American artifacts?  I have several arrow and spear heads that I found recently near the river, and I want to be able to date them and future finds.

I believe that there is a federal law mandating that all artifacts be left completely undisturbed.

It may only be a state law, in which case I know that in CO, CA, and WY it is illegal to touch or move any Native American relics.

I do have a few things including  a mono and matate, a large stone hammer head, and a dozen complete arrowheads that I picked up when i was younger.

I do encourage you to look into the legalities though!

Hunting arrowheads is something I enjoy when time allows.  Here in Texas artifacts belong to the landowner and if you have permission or go to a fee type dig it's quite legal.  Public land is off limits.  Lucky, I don't know the rules for your area but I go to the inlaws in Owensboro and Davis Co. pretty often and have wished I could do some looking up there.  A good site to look for more info is arrowheadforums.com.  You'll notice folks can be tight lipped there because someone got arrested off that board for not following the letter of the law.  There is alot of good info to gleen if you have the time to read though.  big
