I have hated everything Metallica has done since the Black Album.  The Black Album was OK, but the first four (five if you include the $5.98 EP) are what Metallica IS.

Death Magnetic isn't that good, but it is better than the Black Album. I expected to hate this album, and find that I am digging it.   There are tantalizing bits that are close to old school Metallica, and one song, Track 5 'All Nightmare Long' could be part of the first 4 albums.  The songs are long, but I like that.  I downloaded it, not wanting to buy another Load, Reload, or St Anger, but I'm going to Walmart tonight to pick up a copy.

The only problem is the Drums again.  It's like they are featured above everything else, and are too loud.  The guitars should be in the forefront, with the drums more in the background.  I don't think Lars' ego could handle that though...

I give it 7 out of 10.

its tough for me to pick out a favorite but i think it would either be suicide & redemption or the unforgiven III. all nightmare long and broken, beat, & scarred are both really good though...
