Parking Boats in backyard

Featured Replies

I am about to buy a house and it is on a corner street and the back yard has just your normal chain link, about 4 feet (whichever is normal height), and I am trying to think of a good way to park my trailers back their and keep them safe. It is a some what safe area, but then also if you see something then it might be temping so I was trying to think of something to add a little more security to them. I have a 16ft bass boat, 16 ft open trailer, and a 4 ft lawn mower/bike trailer.

I was curious on what others have done, if just the plan chain link has been enough. I am thinking about building a 6-8ft privacy wooden fence and that would be about $1,200 if I build it myself. I will most likely do that, but I was just trying to get some other ideas too.

Also I have been parking in the back yard just in the grass in the past at my current house, but I wonder if it is better for the tires to sit on gravel instead? To help the tires last longer, keeping them from dry rotting. What do you think?

The Pic of your back yard is not working correctly but I would recommend building a privacy fence. That will help you keep your stuff longer(no one will see it and know that you have it, until you use it) As for driving on the grass I would put some gravel down, You never know how the yard drains when it rains plus it would help your tires from dryrotting.

I have motion lights all around my house and garage.  They work great and give me piece of mind.  The only problem with those are the coons, cats, deer, skunks, and every other thing that creeps around at night sets them off frequently.

Either a privacy fence or buy one of those temp carports that have the tarp type sides to them.

I agree with Jimzee. The lights with motion detectors work great.

Do you have a boat cover? If so, you can rig a set of contacts hooked up to a light switch in a concealed location, (inside the building) and on the business end put a 120db alarm horn and a flood light. If someone tries to get under the cover, the alarm sounds and will wake up every neighbor within a half block. I rigged one up inside my garage as we were having a bunch of break ins this summer. The key is to remember to turn it off before you go in.

It has two flood lights out off the carport, come in handle when coming home with the boat at nights, and I can add a motion light.  It has a carpot, but I'm going to screen that area in.  My boat does have a cover (trailerable kind).

Don't forget the most basic stuff like trailer hitch locks.  Also I had a buddy that bought the tire locks that the police use to attach to tires for cars.  When attached to a wheel it makes it impossible for the wheels to turn.  I would definately do more than just build a fence.  The fence is only going to keep them out for a moment.  You want to give them plenty of hurdles to jump through and make them tough as possible.

My boat sets in my driveway in plain view.  Naturally, it has the hitch lock and a full cover.  It also has a motion light that looks over it and an on-board burglar alarm.  The alarm has its own motion sensor.  If the boat is moved off its jack, the alarm sounds.

Is it a actually boat alarm or one you made with a car alarm?  How do you have power going to it?
