when  boat capsized would any mayday devive work when wet ?

Could coast guard use a device to pick up heat in water.? from helicopter search plane ? Could a scanner type device be used in conjunction with a global

satelite ( like goggle earth ) to do scans and give a way point s of

heat sensed or object in water.

They have a gadget that buts off a signal on some life vest. I have no idea what they are called or where you could find one. But I know they have them. Might need to Goggle it and find out.

I heard a reporter say that the searchers do use infrared and heat-sensing imaging to search for people lost at see.  But even with all the technology that they use, something like 75% of those people who are found are spotted by guy with a pair of binoculars

Anybody even thinking about going offshore as far as those guys did better have a well made EPIRB on board.  The better ones activate when immersed in seawater.  It would seem they didn't have one or for some reason it failed to activate properly.  

There is something new called the GPIRB.  Not only does it broadcast a beacon it transmits your gps coordinates to the USCG.  

These guys made a bunch of mistakes that caused this tragedy.  Small boat, knowing a front is on the way, going out 35+ miles.

If you go out 20-50 miles you need a boat that can handle the swells, two motors, extra radio, extra battery, extra gas, and last

A good dose of common sense!

Yeah if you do fish Erie, definitely bulk up on the safety gear. I used to go out on it with my Dad and his bud on a 21 or 23 ft boat. We had a couple close calls. One in particular, it went from smooth as glass to 10 ft swells in less than 3 hours.

We barely made it back. We were actually on the radio with the coast guard at one point. A bass boat, with its lower profile would never be seen in those types of swells. I would highly recommend these GPS locators on Erie or Ontario (those are the 2 I have been on), probably a good idea on any larger body of water like that. Those lakes are just too big and too temperamental.
