Gambler Swim Blade

Featured Replies

I've been using this lure for two days. So far, it has accounted for 8 LMB.

The action is amazing, but I am experiencing a surprising amount of line twist. This is while using a baitcasting outfit. It does hang up in the weeds,  quite a bit, so I imagine dragging the lure back with the weeds on it could be causing some of the problem. It doesn't seem to twist in the water when it is moving freely, but I don't know.

Is anyone experiencing the same type of line twist with these or other chatterbait type lures?

As an aside, 4 of the bass, yesterday, were caught with the trailer, and 2 without.

You shouldn't be getting line twist with a chatter-style lure. Are you sure you didn't have line twist before you tied it on?

As an aside, IMO the Gambler swimblade is not good compared to the original Chatterbait. The only other brand I've found that is almost as good as the original is the Strike King version.

The Chatterbait action is tighter, much more consistent, and you can work it much faster and much more slowly than the Gambler. I've also had the Gambler swimblade fail me where the split ring meets the blade.

On getting "hung up" on weeds - try ripping it out of the weeds like you would do with a rat-l trap and you may find that most of the "weeds" will be shaken off.  I agree though, Gamblers aren't as good as the original Ch-baits - they seem to ride too high when being retrieved and don't sink as well.  Just my opinion.

I have only used the chatterbait, so my experience coems from that.  But, no you should not be getting line twist.  Others have mentioned the different action of the gambler, so perhaps the way it is tied on it is causing it to helicopter when you first cast.  I've had other lures do it but never a bladed lure.  Good luck.

Brand new line spooled up, so the line twist was not present. It does seem to helicopter when casting, but I'm not sure why. I have used the pure poison, and I picked up a Booyah boogie, last night. I'll try these to see if the problem persists.

Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW, I tried it on two different baitcasters, both with new line.

I don't get twist with those lures and I'm using spinning which is more subject to twist.

The Swim Blade has not caused me problems with the split ring. The fact that it has to be fished more slowly than the Chatterbait doesn't make it a worse lure, it's a different lure.

The Chatterbaits have good action and draw strikes, but I don't like the fact that the hook is very prone to rusting, the skirt slides down and it doesn't have a trailer keeper.

The Boogee Bait would probably be my bait of choice except for the fact I don't like the flexible hook. Both it and the Swim Blade are better made than the Chatterbait as far as I can tell.

Just an update. Both the Booyah boogie blade, and Pure Poison have worked without a hitch. Tomorrow, I'm going to tie on the Gambler Swim Blade. As I think, both instances of line twist came from the same spool of line. I had used a spool of 12# test Berkley Sensation to spool up both reels. The reel I'm using, now is spooled with 12# test Suffix Elite yellow.

The reason I think the line is the problem is that I tied a leader onto the Suffix from the Sensation, and the line left on the spool was twisted.

Hopefully, that is the answer.
