Kids Baseball

Featured Replies

Is it acceptable to run Baseball games so late for kids? These are 5th graders that leave the field around 9:30pm on a school night. I coached some T-ball in the past but, I for one disagree with games running so late. Anyone else feel the same or are ya OK with it?

They always ran that late when I played as a kid too.  I'm ok with it though.  If a kid can't go to sleep at 10:30 and wake up in time for school, then he needs to shorten his morning routine some.

Late? Agreed!  Doesn't leave much time for homework.  You have to schedule games if you want to have a season.  If scheduling fields is an issue, meaning there are not enough for the league size, then you have to manage it as best you can to get all the games in within the season. I agree with you and have felt the same way, but I also have seen the difficulty in scheduling. The kids will be alright.  PLAY BALL!!!

9:30 is pushing it some, but I don't mind the late games. It's a good lesson in time management for the kids. My girls do a lot of homework in the van on the way to games and practices.

My bigger issue is with games on Sunday, but I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Yep, more teams than room.

I was just sitting there at a game Monday night and thinking how much pressure this has to be on these kids, and theres alot of that now days. so, I wonder if this is just unneeded pressure we allow to happen to them? Just started feeling a bit guilty and responsible for it :-/

Don't be so hard on yourself.  Are the kids having fun?

I want to believe that most of the kids are there because they want to play.  School will be out soon enough and that will help.

My daughter is in 4th grade and has played a couple of 8:00 games this season.  As long as we get to the house by 10:00 and she's in bed by 10:30, I think it's OK.  Now if she were playing 2-3 games a week at this time, I'd be concerned about it.  Even on early games (6:00), she has a couple of hours to do homework.

I'm with Daniel on Sunday games and practices.  Fortunately we are a small community and don't have to deal with it.  One thing to consider is in a couple of years (7th grade) they will be playing middle school games out of town and will have to get used to getting in late (sometimes closer to midnight) every now and then.  I think if it's only occasional, there's nothing to worry about.

We would have late games all the time when I played little league.  12 year olds can handle it fine. But 6 year olds playing ball at 10pm is pushing it.

It gets worse with tournaments...  I remember playing on a couple All-Region teams.  During tourneys, we would play all day.  Sometimes the title game (I was pretty good back in the day  ;D ) would start at 9pm or later.  We wouldn't get back home until 1 or 2am.

Be there one-hour before the game.

Get home around 10 PM.

Kid is really tired.

May not play baseball in future as it is 1) boring; 2) goes way too late into the night on school nights and 3) too many practices.

Lacrosse is on the horizon.

His brother loves soccer and that is all he wants to play.

Go figure.  :D
