Auto Mechanic question

Featured Replies

My 96 S10 truck quit running on me today, I took off from work and half way down the street it just died, like it ran out of gas. I just filled up in gas yesterday, ::)

My best guess is the fuel pump, but I'd like to ask if you think that a relay could be another choice?

If a relay goes out wouldn't it go out and not let a vehicle start? I don't think one could go out while your driving and kill the engine like it just ran out of gas?

I'd like to see if I could TRY and fix it myself, a mechanic wants $500 to replace a fuel pump, but if a relay could do this then off to the mechanic I go.

Check to see if you have fuel pressure at the valve on the fuel rail, then if you do then you know its not the pump.  If it doesn't see if you have power and ground going to the pump, if you do and its not pumping then wham bam thank you ma'am its your pump.  You could do it yourself but since you said you just filled up i would take the bed off and do it that way... alot easier and no mess.

Have someone help you.

One person stand near your gas tank or where you put your gas in on the side of the truck. The other person turn the key over so the power is on. Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump kick on. It will only turn on for like 2-3 seconds or so and than you wont hear it.

If you dont hear anything its prob your fuel pump.

Yea, it will start then when you give it gas peddle it wants dies. Then the pump won't work, let it sit then it starts up, but does everything all over again. But have to drop the tank! dang it

Just for grins ck the fuel filter first.
