red hooks by mistake

Featured Replies

So i just received an order from bass pro that i've been waiting for and realized that I ordered 50 red hooks when i meant to order 50 regular black Gammies. I know some people love red hooks, i'm just not one of those people. What's you guys opinion on these hooks, will they hurt my fishing or not really make any difference at all.

I don't believe there's any significant difference.  I dunno what depths you plan to use them at, but the deeper they go, the more that the red will just look gray to the fish due to red light not penetrating as deep as other colors of light... I do not believe that they trigger more strikes as some sort of aggressive response to the color of blood like some people claim... I think that at best it accentuates a lure, at worst, in gin clear water it might look more unnatural to the fish.

I'm not a big believer in red hooks although I do use them on some of my topwater baits. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Just use them. They shouldn't have a negitive effect on your fishing. One thing though. Don't put all of them into your tackle box. Just put a few at a time. Over time they will rub against each other and your red hooks will become gold.

I agree, it's a confidence thing.  That being said, i use red hooks on all my T-rigs, and have replaced the front treble on most of my cranks.

The only difference that I have found is that the hook point tends to roll over more and ruin the hook because whatever they make them out of is softer than regular steel.

You'll be fine, they'll end up just turning black the deeper you go.  Also the red does rub off readily.

I don't think there is much of a difference.

I don't even mind putting on a red hook.

After all, it should not render the bait useless.

Just go our and see what happens.

thanks for all the advise guys. I figured it was just a confidence thing, but because I have none in red hooks, I wanted other opinions to boost my confidence and allow me to fish effectively without worrying that I'm not getting bit because of the red.
