Split Shotting....

Featured Replies

Good Morning everyone!

What a great morning to be out on the water.....I have the kiddies though so I won't be out there today!

Anyway I have a question. THought I was pretty knowledgable whenit comes to Bass Fishing but I guess I am missing something. What the heck does the term of style "split shotting" mean? :;)

Any and all input please and Thanks 8-)

Split-shotting is like a light carolina rig (sort of).  I usually use it when I'm fishing with a spinning rig with light line and throwing a senko, fluke, or other weightless plastic.  I'll put the split shot anywhere from 6" to 2' up from the hook if the wind is blowing too much to get any feel or if I want the plastic to scoot above the grass.

Search split-shotting on this forum and see what comes up.

Then read any articles on the forum about split-shotting.

After that, Google split-shotting and see what is said.

And last, see posts that will follow my post.

Here is how you set up this bottom rig:

Using your fluoro line, be it 8 or 10 pounds, or even 12 if you wish, put on your favorite small hook, like a #1 gold hook or a 1/0.  If you can go weedless with the 1/0 please do so.

Then, take a round split-shot weight (make it totally round) without the tag end that is used to remove the split-shot weight so that you are using the one like a basketball, and crimp it onto your line about 12 to 18 inches from your hook.

Use the split-shot round weight without the tag as the tag accumulates the bottom slop and grass faster than a totally round weight.

You can use whatever weight size you want depending on how fast you want the rig to fall and if there is any current in the water.

Use your favroite plastic worms and you are all set.

Easy to rig and cast and this setup will get hits.

Throw to the shore, under docks and piers, out in the open water or any other way you want to fish it. But be aware that you are pulling a round ball weight on the bottom so be ready to get snagged.

So experiment with it and I am sure you will like this type of finesse fishing.  ;)

X2!!!

BTW Great post Sam way to be on top of it!!!!

Sam's post is excellent, but I differ in my split shot technique, in a couple of ways.

If I am going to use a typical split shot set up.

I use 2/0 - 3/0 EWG hooks, and a Bull shot, anywhere from 1/32 - 1/4 oz.  Bull shot is a bullet weight but clamps on the line like a regular round split shot.

Then I use a Finesse or trick worm (color or your choice as long as it is pumpkin or watermelon) ;D  I normally put my splitshot 12-24 in. up from the hook.

That being said, I much more prefer the MOJO rig to a splitshot rig.  Use it the same way, but you do not have a weight CRIMPED on your line, instead it is a small cylindrical weight pegged on your line with a rubber type stopper.

Fishbear, you are right on target.

Actually, any way you want to set it up and it works is good.

I use this rig on lakes so a six pound test is a little light for me but it should work as it is a great finesse test.

The Mojo rig is also a good rig to use.  Ike introduced it to me but it is so easy to set up the split-shot that I use the split-shot the most.

But, due to your post, I will try the Mojo rig once again.

Thanks,

Sam

Sam,

You are right, as long as it works for you, then do it!

I use the Yo Zuri Hybrid, so 6 lb. test is like using 10 or 12, mono.

The biggest bonus to the mojo rig, in my opinion besides not having a weight clamped on your line, is this.

The weight is cylindrical like a pencil, and does not gather the grass and weeds as badly, and will work over and around sticks, rocks, etc... better than a clamped weight.  And if I want to go to a lightweight T rig, I just remove the rubber peg holding the weight in place.  Which I have done and actually caught fish that were ignoring the mojo set up.

I was actually fishing the tx when Fluke caught his PB on a mojo rig in the grass, on back to back fish.  One of my buddies actually watched him catch the 2 hawgs on the mojo, that day.  Weigh in was something to watch, I can tell you!!!
