Featured Replies

Just back from the weigh-in,almost every fisherman claimed that it was a real tough bite today.Air temp at blast off was 24 degrees.119 boats,13 limits.Kotaro Kiriyama had a monster that won him big bass of the day.(And most likely the whole tournament).....the beast weighed 7-15.

Notable that blanked today: IKE......didnt even show his face near the stage.

Today was definitely a better day at the weigh-in stand."Cheeseburger" made a big jump after a ZERO yesterday,he brought 17-15 to the scales today, anchored by a 7+ pounder.Ike also had a ZERO yesterday but brought a limit today. The leader,Hoyt Jr is on some good fish and most of all,he's able to get them to bite. He's got a 2.5 lead on Dudley as it sits now.I talked with a co-angler and he says Dudley is throwing the biggest jig he's ever seen.

Should be interesting tomorrow, supposed to be real heavy winds.Hoyt Jr may be hard to beat,he's got a solid pattern going......but you cant count out Dudley,he's in 2nd right now,he knows the lake as well as anybody and he won the last BASS Northern here in October, 2 years ago, with terrible conditions then also.

Just back from final weigh in......Hoyt Jr won it by 1 oz over Dudley. He took home about $30 grand cash and a fully rigged Triton worth $45,000.Both guys had limits today,Dudley claimed to have "sandbagged too much" the first day.

im not a tournament fisherman but was interested in a few things.  when i was reading the results i saw how hoyt jr's father had left a key spot to let his son round out his limit.  is this common?  obv. it is considered legal to help your friends in this way but i guess im just interested in the ethics involved.  im certainly not trying to say that anyone did anything wrong, i just wonder how big of an advantage it is to know a lot of people on the tours.  if it is common to have good spots handed over down the stretch i would imagine it is a major advantage.

just curious and forgive my naivete,

matt

I agree about the advantage factor.A few people at the weigh-in were wondering the same thing as you but it is legal. His dad let him in an area, not just a certain hole or dock.I heard some say that "dad" was back there guarding that stretch from other anglers coming in before Jr got there but there would be no way to prove that really.Jr had 4 and went way back in Gills to try for his fifth, his dad happened to be there. They talked, dad wasnt in contention to win so he pulled out and let Jr fish down that stretch. Its not like dad gave him a fish from his livewell......Jr still had to make the fish bite, fight the fish and boat the fish. However,I do think things would've been different if it had been some other angler in there instead of his dad.

I'm sure it happens some on every tour and at every level.....its really no different than talking to other contestants at the hotel. They share certain info and lots of them are good friends off the water.I bet it happens in alot of tournaments actually.

Hoyt Jr did a whale of a job all 3 days.He caught a limit each day under very tough conditions.Day 1 was 24 degrees at blast off plus rain late in the day,Day 2 was steady rain ALL DAY,Day 3 was high sun and unbearable winds.Congrats to him.

he absolutely did a great job and deserves every bit of credit hes getting.  my question was more general than directed at this situation in specific (although this situation is what made me wonder about it).  i would imagine its a tremendous advantage to have a lot of friends on the tour that you are fishing.  if people are willing to let you have a few areas when they are out of contention that has got to help you round out a limit.  i guess thats just one of those things that exist in any sport, and are unavoidable (and not necesarily bad).

hoyt jr. did a heck of a job and i in no way meant to imply that i thought otherwise in my post.
