Help!! Going to Fish the "Dam to Dam" on the river in a few weeks.

Anyone have any recommendations, since I have never fished the river.  I hear there are a lot of smallies.  My partner has fished it a many times, but I don't want to be completely dependent on him.  We are good friends, but also have our on competition between ourselves.  Any inside tips would be greatly appreciated. ;)
