Gaston last weekend

Featured Replies

Went down to Gaston for the weekend, and it was definetly tough! We didn't fish all day, because we wakeboarded, and just relaxed some but still didn't catch much. Got there Saturday at around 10 oclock and went out for a few hours. My brother missed one on a 7 inch ribbontail worm, and I caught one on a crankbait.

We went out again that night and the action was definetly better. I caught a nice keeper sized bass on a LC sammy, and then my brother caught one on a worm again. His was a good 2 lber. It got dark, so I switched to a crankbait. 1st throw I had something huge on....Biggest thing I've ever had on in my life. I hooked up with it, then I reeled it in close to the boat then it BOLTED. It took about 100-150 feet of drag, I had no control of this fish. This was on my 7' MH rod, and I am almost positive it was a huge striper in the 25-30lb range. It pulled our boat around too. It popped right off the hook about a minute into the fight, boy was I angry. We each caught another one on worms that night, both keeper sized.

Sunday morning was a nice hour and a half out there as well. Threw the LC sammy again and sure enough, 5th or 6th cast one just sucked it down. My brother caught one on a worm again, and that was about it.

Thanks for reading my long story!

Matt

Man  you lose something big everytime i see you (jk) but thats is just tough luck those stripers have soft mouth and it doesnt help you hooked it with a crankbait just want meant to be hope you stick a 40lb striper later in the fall

Matt,

Is the fishing totally different in Gaston vs. Kerr, if so do you have any advice, I am planning on a week trip up that way and would like to fish both resevoirs.

sounds like a great time.

I don't know too much about Kerr, but I've heard its "all about fishing the islands, humps, and flats". Gaston really is a great fishery, go for it! Lots and lots of docks on Gaston, you can probably always catch fish off of the docks.

Big fish hit me twice on Gaston.

Two years ago we were trolling our Carolina rigs over a rock bed and something took my lizzard and he is still going west with it.  Probably near Chicago by now.  I could not turn him or stop his run.

This year, at the mouth of Popular Creek, something hit my favorite crankbait, ran right at me and went under the boat, and the line snapped. I guess he is still going and going and going and going....

Gald to read that you got some on a LC Sammy.  Last time out of Gaston my friend hooked a beauty on a Sammy and she threw it back at us on her second jump.  What a bummer.

So you all are the newest members of the "Lake Gaston What in the World Was That?" Club.

No dues; just a bunch of funny stories about the ones that got away.

Yeah no joke Sam...That thing was just full of power! The other funny thing was it was dark, the sun just went down and I was out on the boat with my 2 younger brothers, it just soudns like a perfect story. I really think it was a big ol striper. How often do you fish Gaston Sam?

Headed up to Gaston this Saturday. Have an ABA tournament out of Stone House. Haven't been there in a while. As far as Gaston and Kerr, they are two

different fisheries. You have more peers and grass in Gaston than Kerr. What works on Gaston usely won't work on Kerr. Talking about the big one's I use to go out at night to the droop off in front of Stone house and take a Devil's horse

and start pop, pop, pop, pop then SPLASH and you wouldn't have no idea what you had on till you got it to the boat. ( I miss those good old days, To darn lazy to go out at night now)
