Lake Gaston December 29 and 30

Featured Replies

It's been a while since I've made a report, haven't really had the chance to get many pictures either. Well we got to the lake saturday morning at around 10, and got out on the water by 12. It was warm when we got there, around 70 degrees, then once we hit the water about an hour into it the temp dropped about 10. We fished main lake points and steep bluffs with very little success, we only managed 4 in about 4 hours of fishing. I caught one on a spot remover right off a dock, and my second on an evolution jig with woolybug trailer in about 2 feet of water on a boat launch.

My brother caught his both on eakins jigs, one about 10 feet off of a shallow dock, and another up under a 14 foot dock.

Sunday I didn't even think I was going to fish...The air temp was about 40 degrees, and it was POURING rain. I was really tempted just to pack up and hang around but I decided just to go out cause I really wanted to fish. We fished for about 20 minutes throwing tight to docks with jigs with nothing, so I threw out in front of the boat about 10 feet off the docks and got a real solid bite, so that had me wondering...I was still fishin the docks but throwing way ahead of the boat and far off of the docks and picked up a nice 2 lber. Moved up a little more and caught 2 more fish, and missed about 3 all on the evolution jig. My brother couldn't catch any in the rain, and he was freezing so we went in after about an hour and a half.

I was real proud of catching those fish in the freezing rain of a cold front. :)

Sorry for the extra long report, but it's been a while

Ps this fish only had 1 eye. It was the jig fish from saturday

Glad you had a good trip.

Sounds like the jig bit was on.

Are you going to try Buggs?

Let us know.

No, I don't think I'll be going to buggs. We stay at sherrwood forest at lake gaston so thats why we go there so much. I would like to try going one day though, I have never fished it. I will have to try one day.

Way to go Matt! Its a good thing your jig landed on the side with the good eye!  ;D

If anybody has been thinking about fishing on Lake Gaston, you really should give it a shot.....the place is crawling with bass plus it always seems like they're hitting crankbaits! (And jigs as Matt proved on a tough day)

Lake Gaston is a great crankbait lake (if that makes sense)

Yes, Gaston is a great crankbait lake,

In fact, whatever hit one of my favorite crankbaits last year while we fished in the snow is still heading north.

I could not turn the fish so I believe it was a stripper.

If it was a bass it as a very b-i-g bass.

But it took the crank and headed out of Popular Creek and never looked back. The line popped, probably from his teeth.

Sam, I was fishing that day as well in the snow. I remember this from last spring  ;D
