First taste of the year...

Featured Replies

Well, got out on the boat today, but had a horrible day. It was probably about 40 degrees F. out, and it was raining all day. I used lipless crankbaits, i drop-shotted, I tried jigs, and i tried soft craws. The only bass i saw was a monster about 5-6 lbs. he was following a baby bass lipless crankbait up to the boat from about 20 feet of water. I played around with him for a while, and then he swam off. Doesn't want bass for lunch... hmmm...  :'( >:( :'( :-/ :-[

Any tips on what I can do to improve next time?

;D

Keep on chuckin the lures out there. We ALL have our bad days and sometimes you can learn from failures too. ;)

The water temp up on pend oreille is still 37-38 degrees. It doesn't matter what the air temp is so much as the water temp. Still needs to get a bit warmer. If you are really jiving to get hooked I would first start on the north western bays. Sounds like you are on the right track with your baits. I would look for bait balls on ledges in 20-30 foot water around rocks and structure.

Remember that water this cold make sure to finesse your baits. I will fish a 15 minute cast sometimes barely moving. When you think you are fishing your bait slow, do it slower :)
