First tournament of the year

Featured Replies

Fished in my club's first tourney of the year this past weekend and it was tough.

Day 1:

The weather was nice, clear and not to windy.  Started off with a short run to a cove.  Threw cranks for a bit without a strike so I switched to drop shotting a Zoom 4" finesse worm in smokin' shad color in 30 feet of water.  Hooked and landed a 1.5 lb smallie.  Not a big fish but things were going better than the previous weekend's pre-fishing.  Made a couple more runs without a strike.  to show how tough the fishing was, after weighing in I was sitting in 8th.  My partner didn't get anything.

Day 2:

The weather was drastically different, windy and rain off and on.  Made the run to the same cove I caught my fish at.  Went straight to drop shotting.  Nothing.  Tried a lipless crank.  Nothing.  After about an hour and a half, trouble started.  The trolling motor quit.  After about 30 minutes of working on it on the water, we ran back to the ramp to get the boat out and continue working on it.  No joy.  Day was over for us.

Pretty disappointed with day 2.  I ended up in 14th out of 38 anglers, which I don't think was that bad all things considered.  1 or 2 more fish and I would've cracked top 10.  We're already making plans for the next tournament next month.
