quite the first on the Potomac!!! Snake head

Featured Replies

Went out with Dan+ today for a couple hours. Wasn't quite the bite I had the other day but we still managed a few. We ended up with 12 bass. Most of our fish were tight to wood. All of Dan's fish were off jigs while mine were off traps and spinner baits. Water temps ranged from 56-62. Yes, I said 62!!! Water was still very muddy. Probably around 12" of visibility.

I was working a trap around a lay down in less than 3 ft of water when my bait got slammed. It swam straight towards me. I finally caught up and new I had a huge fish. I really thought it was going to be a 7/8 lbs. I was shocked when I finally got a look near the boat... My first snake head. She went 7 lbs. She completely swallowed my trap. It was so deep in her mouth we couldn't get it out. Dr. Dan will be performing surgery this evening to get my lucky bait back followed by a nice fish fry!

I'm waiting for him to die in a cooler filled with ice...then surgery will commence.

wow, heartbraker. That is the worst feeling. Nice size to her though. I can't tell you how many times i thought i hooked a monster bass only to see a 3-4 foot northern pike. The first time it happens on a trip is entertaining, after that, it gets out right annoying

Dude, you're crazy! They are a blast to catch!

same thing happens here only its either a chain pickeral or a mudfish.

fun the first few times.... not so cool more than once a day.

You mean you actually eat those things?

  • Super User

yessir. Thems good eatun

  • Super User

I thought they were supposed to have teeth.

I've seen more teefs in the mouth of a shellcracker.

  • Super User

it's the angle of the shot. I'll try to get another one when I cut him up tomorrow.

  • Author

yep bad angle. lots of teeth!

That thing is huge.... how long did it take for it to die in a cooler? I heard they live a long time out of water

  • Super User

I dunno for sure, but he was alive for at least 5 hours after I put him on ice. They can live a long time as long as they stay wet.

Ehhh just reach down in there and grab the lure....a few scraps won't hurt much :)

That is a nice size snakehead

I thought you east coast guys are supposed to kill and dispose of them. I suppose eating is another alternative.

  • Super User

Eating them is killing and disposing of them. Might as well make use of them.

Several 36"-48" pike would be just fine by me...heck, it would be downright awesome.

Very true. How do they taste?

  • Super User

pretty good. I've only fried them and fried fish all tastes pretty much the same to me. I might try to do something else with these fillets.

Well forgive me for just getting back from a triple kegger, but if it's whit flakey fried fish then it is good!

  • Super User
