Soft SB Necessities

Featured Replies

Finally decided it's time to actually start chucking the big baits. Talked the girl into buying me some swimbaits for Christmas, mainly soft baits like Mattlures gill and bass and some 6" hudds. What I'm asking is what type of softbait glue you guys prefer and what type of gel to coat the lures with? Thanks for the help.

I use 3:16 glue. I dont use scent/lube 90% of the time.

Mend it gets my vote.  It is hands down the best soft bait fix I have ever used.  Not a glue but causes a chemical process that actually melts the tears back together in just about any plastic I have used from swimbaits to soft stick baits.

I did find "lubricating" the soft plastic baits with a thick paste type scent like Mega Strike helped with fishing the bait thru grass, pads, and cover.  Plus I feel I can get a better hook set.  Might be just a personal thing but it works for me.

I use "Pro's Soft Bait glue".  It's kinda expensive, but It lasts me a couple years.  I don't use scents very often.  Mainly when I buy new baits that smell horrible i'll soak it overnight in Pro Cure.  Sometimes in dingy water i'll add some scents as well.

Bizz- I thought I had read somewhere that Matt implied that using something like megastrike would increase hookups with his softbaits. Any reason you don't or do you even use those baits?

Also, Which rigging method to you prefer when throwing Hudds? I've seen  Fish Chris' and so far I think that I might try that one. Possibly without removing the single hook.

i use megastrike on mine not sure if it makes a difference but gives some confidence

When it cvomes to scents dude, its probably that im lazy. Im sure they get you another bite here and there, and im sure they help hooksets and bait wear, but im just too lazy lol. on the rare occasiont that i do use them, I use pro cure.

My hudd rigging is pretty intricate. I use the provided jig hook. Thats it. If I am throwing the rof5 i use a hook attached to the line tie with a split ring. I never use stingers on the 6" and very very rarely will i on the 8" and that is if I am fishing a spot/smallie lake.

Stingers kill big largemouth imo.

Thanks for your input. I wasn't asking for the scent purpose. Seems like I remembered seeing something posted from Matt that he recommended that megastrike or the like be used to allow the lure to soft plastic to slide through the fishes mouth so that the hook can then set easier.

I use 3:16 glue and megastrike for lube.

I hear a knocker is pretty much a necessity as well. Haven't had to use mine yet

X INFINITE!!!!!  Can't stress enough on the importance of these for big baits.  Saved a few hundred dollars in the few times I've used it.  They are so cheap, it's stupid not to have one.  They pay for themselves the first time you use them

Knocker was understood. Thanks for everything so far. I'm sure I'll have plenty more to come along once I have these baits on the water.

From Matt's own site  (www.mattlures.com):

Have you ever wondered how guys are getting 15-20 or more fish per soft swimbait when yours are getting torn up after only a few fish? There are a few tips that every swimbait thrower should do to get the most out oh their baits. The first thing I do when I get a new bait is to glue all the potential weak spots. Anything that protrudes out of the plastic should be reinforced with glue. I prefer soft bait glue but super glue will work. I will gently pull back the plastic away from the hook until there is a small hole just big enough to put a drop of glue into it. I will do this where the hook eye comes out of the bait and any other metal eyes that are used to add hooks. If you have problems with getting the glue all over your baits just put a drop on some cardboard and dip a tooth pick into the glue, then apply the glue with the tooth pick. It is also important to inspect your bait after every fish. Check for tears and make the necessary repairs before you make another cast. This will keep them from tearing any further

Now that you have your bait reinforced and you are ready to fish it you will need to apply some lube to the bait. Most scents that will stay on the bait for a long time will make a good lube. I prefer Mega-strike because it has the consistency of Vaseline. Most guys know how important it is to lube your Swimbaits because it increases your odds of hooking the fish when you get bit. The lube will also help your bait resist tears. Even if you don't think scents and attractants will get you more bites you should still apply a generous amount of lube to your Swimbaits. If for nothing else it will prolong their life.

Another common problem with soft Swimbaits is they tend to get warped or twisted when they are not stored properly. It is usually very easy and quick to straighten them out. Soft plastic will return to its original shape if you put it in boiling water. It is not a good idea to submerge the glue on eyes in the boiling water because they could become clouded or fall off, but the rest of the bait will be fine. Dip the body of the bait in the water for about 1-3 minutes and then suspend it in cold water until the bait is completely cooled. This should bring it back to its original shape. Now maybe you will get more fish per bait.

That's very similar to what I saw on here from one of his posts.
