Crankbaits fished like jerkbaits

Featured Replies

Anyone use this as a technique?  there are some days when I toss a crankbait and let it sit like a jerkbait then twitch it, again like a jerkbait.  This has worked really well for me some days.   As a matter of fact I have this lucky craft CB200 that only seems to work if I fish it this way.  I have caught a bunch on it but I can't remember one that was caught when the bait was being cranked.  Odd, don't ya think?

I would not say it is odd. How many baitfish do you see swimming in a constant straight line. A baitfish swims a little ways stops, then starts in a new direction, then stops so forth and so on. Even a bass when spooked will do something similar. The only thing that I normally see swimming in a straight line while at the lake is somebody's lure. There are times that I don't use the reel for anything except to take slack and use the rod to move the lure. I may pull the lure as little as 6 inches or as far as I can turn. I know that it is real deadly on smallies in the spring. Rip the lure forward about 6 feet and reel the slack as fast as you can just to rip it again.

When a baitfish is dying it will just twitch in place or move forward and quiver. A bass will not pass up the chance at an easy meal.

deadstickin with a twitch    probably the one technique that can be used succesfully with anybait

Avid, when you do that technique, are you cranking it down to a certain depth or are you throwing it out and letting it sit on top of the water when you start?

I find thaat this works best in muddy water.

Fish like a reular crank in clear water.

avid, I use a suspending crank (usually a shad rap rs) just like a jerkbait anytime I am near laydowns. It is a very effective technique around brush. I will also use them out on points if the fish seem to be suspending and staying deep and not coming up for the jerkbaits that are only 3'-4' down. The suspending crank allows me to get closer to their strike zone and stay in it longer.....and i work it just like a jerkbait.

It's nice to know that people are going that far back.

I have noticed that a lot more lately. There have been a lot of older posts resurfacing. I'm glad to see peeps are getting the hang of using the search feature or taking the time to search through threads for what they are looking for. Not to say that I mind answering a repeat thread, cuz I have no problem with that. Sometimes I just think that it is equally beneficial for a new member or an older member to do a search on the subject to gather info from some members who may no longer be here or something that may be missed in a new thread. ;)

I have used this tactic for smallies using Norman Baby N's on the river and Wiggle Warts on the lakes ,with Suspend-A-Dots, for smallmouth. Sometimes its just what they want. Especially the Wiggle Warts that run about 10' on #8 test, in clear mountain reservoirs.

Avid, crankbaits are the most versatile baits in the box. To me, it seems most folks just "crank and wind" with crankbaits but give them a jig or a worm and they will vary the depth, retreive or colors and not give it a second thought. The same thing works for cranks.
