Wading so I guess it's not too deep. I'd use a tube jig with the lightest weight I can get away with and still keep contact on the bottom without getting hung up too often. Cast upriver and bring it down while twitching your wrist and takeing up the slack line on the reel. When in doubt, set the hook.

I use a small (1-2") plastic crawfish rigged on a small jig head.  I like dark reds as well as orange/green.  I throw it upstream on a spinning rod and let it drift with the current allowing it to just bump the bottom.

Hey der... What river will you be fishing? On rivers I generally use smaller plastics on 1/16th oz. Jigs. 2" Case Helgies, 3" Gitzit Tubes, 5" Slug-O's, and Plastic Worms anywhere from 5-8" from various companyes like Berkley, Culprit, Renegade, etc - Texas or Carolina Rigged. A Senko Whhhacky Worm style can also be deadly around cover. During the summer you cant go wrong with hard baits. From Spinners, Buzzbaits, Cranks, Jerks, to Topwaters, all can produce big and usually do produce... big Rivers can be very easy to fish, especially if they are shallow. Spots that hold fish are usually very obvious from above the water. My favorite type of fishing going after Smallies

Everyone else's suggestions are good I just have to add In-Line spinners!! I have not found a more productive lure for shallow rivers. Best part is they will catch more than just bass.  ;D
