Pretty simple answer to that one. Build one!!  ;)

Honestly, ponds are very expensive if you do them right.

Depends on the topography of the site, the content of the soil and of course how large of a pond you wish to build.  We have built about 8 ponds over the last 5 years.  We built one about 2.5 acres.  That pond cost about $18,000.00 (soil was semi rocky).  Hope this helps!

If you are honestly interested in building a pond, I have a friend in Mass. who bought land with a stream fed and spring fed water supplied pond already existing.  He approached the marine biologies dept at UMASS Lowell and they use his pond as a lab.  He essentially calls the shots as to what and how much to stock as a forage base allowing for the colleges opinions but they monitor and give him constant progress reports as to how his pond is thriving or not.

If you can justify it for agriculture or erotion control some states will also assit in it's construction.  The only draw back they call the shots on how it's built, unless you have a fairly reasonable plan in mind.   There are also other requirements that may have to be met.
