Fishing the current

Featured Replies

I was out today fishing the main part of the lake.  just as usual there where times when there was a nice current.  I was setting up my boat just down current from the cover I was fishing (downed trees, and rock piles).  I was throwing senkos and other finesse worms.  I would throw them ahead of me and let them drift back towards me at an angle twiching them every so often.  I caught two this way.  Just wanted to know how others approach this situation and some of the techniques you guys use.  I haven't fish in many lakes that have current, until this year.  any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your approach is text book. Rivers and lakes that have current during different times of the day are the easiest to pattern. Release times are always posted by the core of engineers. Know when the current is generated is half the battle. the other is finding what the fish are holding on. Sand bars, grass, points, downed timber etc....

I grew up fishing on the Ohio, yes it's full of dinks.  Your approach is right on.  Find current breaks and fish the seams.  LMB don't like to be directly in current.  Drift you bait down with the current.  Bridge pillings are always good, especially close to the bank or where the water flow is changed.  If you have a depth finder look for structure on the bottom, anything to break the current.
