Bass Behavior questions

Featured Replies

Hello all,Went out today and caught a few and on one the strangest thing occured.

As I was reeling the fish in ,I saw another  fish Dart out from under some vegetation and chase the fish I had hooked. I am almost certain theres only Bass,Bluegill and Yellow Bullheads in this pond. What could that behavior indicate? No big deal,I just thought it was strange.

These Bass are very actively feeding on Dragonflies. Fully leaping out of the water to catch em.  They are jumping all over the place. What bait would be good to throw in these circumstances? Im not a flyfisherman and no good at it so thats out of the question . The same Bass I mentioned above had a  whole dead dragonfly hanging on its snout and in the fishes throat there was what appeared to be a "Mini Fish Filet" sticking out. All white meat,no scales, skin, fins, tail, just the filet.Wonder what kind of fish that might have been sticking out of its throat and why it looked like that ? Could this have been a sign of regurgitation? I Was throwing a Green/red flake Strike King Zero today. They tore up the green ones(Caught 9 dinks) but when I tried the white Colored baits they wouldnt even look at it. So guess color does matter!!! Thanks for the replies

This time of year they are starting to school and feed a schools of bait fish.  This happens many times this time of year.  Seems like when you hook one, the others start going crazy and want what your fish has.  If you were fishing with a partner they should have cast a senko type bait behind your hook up and I can almost guarantee he would have hooked up as well.

I think it does matter more with the smaller fish and they identify it more readily as food. A couple of weeks ago my buddy was tearing them up up on a fluke, but most were real small. So I kept trying other things with no virtually no luck at first. And I tried a pile of them. Although he continued to hound me to switch to what he was useing, the small ones just don't excite me,and we knew larger fish are mixed in. Baby Bass Senkos and lime green w/ gold flk brush hogs did pretty well even though most of the fish were still small. But once you switched from that color scheme they would shut down and he would still be pulling them in.  I don't rember what color he was useing.

the fish were very active that day, and you could throw about anything to catch 'em. thats a day when you want to be careful to scare 'em (just to be sure, even though their activity is high) and cast a lot! and put the fish back in the water away from where you caught it.

hm.. I was just thinkin this would be GREAT! to catch bass on a flyrod. and then you mentioned the flyrod, hah....

ur fish seemed to be in a active mode. feeding!... they were relating to the top, i would have tried any lure relating to the top 1/3 of the water column. top water such as pop-r spittin image ,...i like a devils hose or even a small 1/4 oz. buzz bait. if they didn't want that i would have switched to a small spinnerbait ripped or waked to illicit a reaction strike. if that didn't work i would have tried soft plastics weedless first then w/ a weight slow falling to see if they would it it on the fall. chasing or top feeding bass want to bite u have to find what they want

When bass feed sometimes they have bait that will pass through their gills and injure the baitfish and other bass are trying to eat them also bass will try to take away another bass's meal.

Hey fishinaz,

I have caught two fish at the same time on the same lure twice now. Once a rather large catfish tried to nick the lure out of a sootys mouth and I ended up with the two stuck together for a short time untill the sooty got off and I landed the catty. Second time it was two small  sootys together. Different sort of fish to your bass but I think the second fish you seen had the same idear of nickin a quick meal from his neighbour.

Darren.
