Building A pond

Featured Replies

I really want to build a small pond and stock it with a few bass. I'm thinking maybe 20 feet in diameter and perhaps 4-6 feet deep in the deepest part. I am thinking of doing this where a small culvert runs through the woods near my drive way. I believe that it runs all year long even if it is just barely at times. Has anyone done this and if so any tips?  I could stock it with smallmouth from my stream that get about 14" long in there and largemouth that I catch. Who knows I could turn it into my secret testing pond.

I have no clue about pond building but i do have a pretty good idea it wouldnt be a good place to test lures out because the bass are in a very different enviroment.

I disagree, a pond would be a great place to test and modify baits it would be like a swimming pool with bass. If there is a lure I don't have confidence in then a pond is a great place to start.

Shadowx, check out the April '05  issue of Bassmaster.  They have a great artical on building a pond and what to and not to do, they interview Ray Scott.

Hope this helps,

Thanks alot I will check that out alhuff and I will visit pondbos.com. I appreciate it, any other responces?

I am looking into doing same thing.  I don't know what climate you are in, but if the lakes in your area freeze during winter, I think you might need to dig a deeper pond than 4-6 feet.
