Weeds that come and go....

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Posting from Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada with a question about weeds.  I have noticed over the past couple of years some major disturbances in weed growth on LOW.  One year there will be vast beds of coontail or cabbage in one area and the next it will non-existant.  I know water levels can play a role, but on a natural lake this big there is very little fluctuation from year to year (0-4ft).  We have been graced by the rusty crayfish in the last 20 years so i guess it is possible that their impacts have begun to surface.  However, this year I have found good weeds where previously they never existed.  Makes patterning the Largies from year to year pretty tough.  Does anyone have any insight into this mystery? By the way, the bass fishing here has been awesome this fall! 21lb+ sack on the weekend!

Man, replying to your own post sucks...my search continues elsewhere :-/

Normally a change in weeds means a change in bottom content. Hard bottom lakes as they age become either muck or peat bottoms after years of a life cycles of plant growth. Certain weeds grow on certain lake bottoms and when the lake changes so does the weeds. Water clarity changes where weeds can grow and flourish also. It could also be that they sprayed them.
