Featured Replies

Dad and I went out today on the Local River and tried for a bite or 2 and didnt even get that. Its a overcast day about 75 deg.. Water is down on river about a foot its stained color. We used wacky works,Crankbaits,Jig n Pig set ups everything I normally Catch em on. Went on main River and Fished Log Jams,Back in a cove Tried shore line and even tossed Crankbait out into open water Still Nothing. What could have caught us a Fish? Any tips on what could help anyhow? Thanks and God Bless ;D

We've all had days like this.

There are probably hundreds of different baits you could've used, and still not had any luck.  Sometimes, they just aren't biting.

You need to use something that thumps or produces noise. A crankbait is a great bait for heavy stained water but not all crankbaits work in this situation. The right vibration is the key. Crankbaits that thump is what I use in this situation. I try to use either bright chartreuse colors or dark colors. A spinnerbait would be another good choice. I would use a single Colorado blade and either chartreuse or black/blue colors. The key to the crankbait and spinnerbait is that they can track the vibration from a long distance. Jig and trailer is another good bait for hitting objects. In your case the log jams screams classic jig cover. Because you have current you might want to pitch beyond the log and bring it to the area. If you pitch it to the log the current might push the jig away from your target. Use a heavy enough jig to fight the current. Black/blue would be a good color and because of the heavy stained water use a rattle. Make contact with the cover or bottom if you can.

I'm not much of a river rat but here's a few thoughts.

Overcast and stained = darker baits with lots of vibration.

Fish should be tighter to the cover.

I don't know if 1 foot down is a big change on your river.

If it is I would look for them at the next set of cover further out. Especially on the down current side.

Hope this helps
