What is this behavior?

well up here in ny the fish are getting on their beds. heres my problem. i walk around this one pond. i saw at least 10 nests. all along the bank. now. i see all the small males (at least i think they are the males) sitting on the nest. then there is a bigger fish (female?????) just going back and forth. she just keeps swimming up and then if she gets to close BANG the male flys over and chases her away. the female won't take anything. all the fish are realllllllllllyyyyyyy spoooky. they jet off at first sight. i put a jig in this paticular females face numerous times only to have her spook out and run away.

then there was another nest with a like 3 pounder on it that i want soooo bad. the thing chases anything and i mean anything away from the nest. and i put every thing i own in the nest only to have it turn its gill to it and leave it alone. why won't they bite!?!?!

Take a 1/2 jig and hit that 3lber in the head a few time and see what happens. It should tick him off enought to get him to strike at it. As for the others. Don't try to cast to the fish if they are off of the actual bed. Put your lure in the bed and wait till they are close enough to see it, then shake it slightly. Try to get the lure in the sweet spot. This is usually a spot in the bed the size of a cup that the fish are accually laying there eggs. This spot is sometimes a little darker or it may be on the side of a stick or something that is in the bed.

The 3lber sounds VERY catchable. I have a routine kind of like Fluke's. First get the bass used to your bait being there. You know you get to that point when the bass starts to ignore your bait. Next I swim the bait into them. Most of the time they will swirl violently and take a good look at your bait. If they don't take then.... cast it right on top of their head and if they don't hit it on the way down, give it a big hop right under their nose. I just flip flop between these methods. It REALLY ticks them off you and you can tell when they are at their breaking point and about to take your bait.

I'd cast past the bed and roll a t-rigged 5 or 6" lizard real slowly right through the bed. Weight it down with a heavy 3/4 or ounce bullet to keep it on the bottom. I give it little shakes and pauses as I'm going through. It makes it look like the lizard is trying to eat their eggs, and I rarely find the bass less than willing to strike once it hits their bed.
