Sorry, newbie here!  I have seen this on TV a while back.  What exactly is this technique?

Technique was originally introduced by winning angler Dee Thomas at a BASS tourney on Bull Shoals lake in the mid-70's.  Left coast BASS tourney angler Dave Gliebe  perfected it even further in the late 70's-early 80's.  It's also known as noodlin in the south.

I've never heard flippin be called noodling

noodling is using your hands to catch fish by sticking them in holes and having catfish grab hold, then you pull the fish out.  Some old timers have also noodled for turtles.

Flippin is just a casting technique for close quarters and quiet presentation, usually in heavy cover.

In Brookly flippin involved someone cutting you off you roll down your window stick your hand out make  fist and extend a finger but I dont know if that answers your question   ;D 8-) :-?

Doodling or dapping is done with a long pole, (cane or fly rod) using a multitude of different baits, primarily fishing for gills and such. However it can be successful fishing for bass with a stout enough rod. It is a very common method of fishing from an air boat.

Flipping is quite different. With a little practise it can be a very effective method for removing bass from brush and laydowns.

my mistake, doodlin is the term. Noodlin is the term for those crazy guys that hand fish for catfish.  Yes, it was long rods used for dunkin minnows but many folks in the early days thought that flippin reminded them of doodlin especially since the rod used, a 7 1/2 footer (a really long rod back in the 70's), was the same thing they were using.

hmmm, I've always thought doodlin was the same thing as "shaky head" fishing or just using a small plastic bait.

For me, flippin is swinging (kind of like a pendulem) a big 'Arkie' jig with an 'uncle josh' frog or black widow eel (uglier the better) gently next to some likely structure. To horse em out of the thick cover, I use 20 lb. line, a 7' long stiff rod  with a boat wench reel.  This takes a lot of patience, my two biggest large mouths were taken this way.
