June Topwaters

Featured Replies

I'm going fishing tomorrow in a Florida lake and am getting out there at sunrise. I have a buzzbait tied on now. Do you think this is a good topwater bait to use in the morning during summer? If not, what will work better?

I'd throw one of 3 topwaters depending on the types of structure:

1)Open water/semi grassy- Pop-R

2)Grassy, timber-buzzbait

3)Really grassy/lillypads-frog

start with a buzz, but if no blow ups, do what texan said and go with a pop r or my choice a frog. i like a frog better than a buzz because i can really sloww a frog down and still keep it on top. i am fishing in the a.m. as well and i have 3 top water rods rigged with a speed worm, frog, and a big spook. tomorrow will be hot so at around 10 or so, i will start flippin, chatterin, flukin and big wormin it.

I like to start big.  I have a Lucky Craft Live Sammy that only draws strikes from big fish.  I had my heaviest stringer in years fishing it last month.  Other days it doesn't do much, but it's exciting to fish a lure and know that if it gets hit, it's getting hit BIG  8-)

In the lake that I fish they seem to hit buzzbaits more aggressively in the dark. You may want to try it. It will scare the life out of you when its quiet and peaceful and all of a sudden a 3 LBer blows up on your bait as your pulling it out of the water. ;D

A buzzbait is an excellent choice. They'll let you know pretty quick if they're on it or not.I've been having much success with a floating jerkbait namely Rogues and Rapalas.Gold-black back, silver black back, and silver blue back are all good colors.
