Bad hooksets.

Featured Replies

I have been losing a lot of fish on jigs lately. I usually lose them on the hookset. I began using scent and they began holding on a little longer. But I am still losing more fish than I should be. I tried sweeping the rod to the side and a hard upward stroke.

I just now trimmed my weed guard, I don't know whether that will help or not.  Can anyone help me figure this out? It cost me a 7+ lb bass this morning.  >:(

Wehn you feel a bite on a jig, depending on the line you are using, you need to really slam that rod back as fast and hard as possible. For example, if you are throwing a 1/4oz. finesse jig on 10lb. test you don't need to really slam the rod back, because the lightwire hook on the jig will penetrate the bass's mouth easily. But when you are pitching a 1/2oz. jig to a tree with 20 or 30lb. test you really need to jerk that fish's lips off, mainly because it takes a harder hookset to get that big heavy hook into a bass's mouth but also you want to get that fish out of the cover in a hurry. So basically just set the hook as hard as you can with the equipment you are using, and also with a jig the hookset should be more of an upwards jerk than sweep-set.

Try flourocarbon line.  It has less stretch than monofiliment.  If you are using a baitcasting reel, hold your thumb on the spool when setting the hook.  If you are using a spinning reel, pinch the line against the base of the rod when setting the hook.
