"walk the dog"?

Featured Replies

Can someone explain how to do the walk the dog technique? Is it just slowly bouncing it off the bottom on the retrieve? Can someone please elaborate on this?

Thanks,

Mike

You make your cast and then point the rod to the water. You reel up till you have simi slack line and you jerk the rod. Each time you jerk the lure will dart to one side take up some of the slack and jerk the rod again on simi slack line.

Walking the dog is basically taking slack line and jerking the rod in a downward motion which in return throws the slack line back at the bait giving the bait an erratic side to side action.

While this is generally a topwater technique there are other baits out there that kind of do the same thing sub-surface.  Jerkbaits both hard and soft come to mind.

Here's a short video clip.  I was going to save this for an intro to a video, but that looks like it will be a while

Yep, that's it.

with a good "walking" type bait.  The sammy and super spook jr. for example walking the dog is not that hard.  Just get into a rhythm of twitching the rod tip with it pointing down and leaving slack in the line.  It's fun, and on the right day it's a killer.

Good luck and have fun.

You know, i actualy know the "walk the dog" technique for top waters i was actually wondering what is ment by "walk the dog" for something like a fat ika as in this link.

Same thing as thetopwaters...it will dart side to side with the same rod motions as listed above.  Since FAt Ika isn't a floater, it will "walk the dog" beneath the surface.
