Featured Replies

i have had one or two subjects like this but what do yall think a bass can withstand without dieing.the reason i ask is that today while fishing a crankbait a fish took it to a bush an got hung up for a minute.while tryin to get lose the second treble hook get em right inbetween the gills.it made a small wound bout half the size of a dime an inside it only looked like fat.do u guys think this is fatal or a wound he'll recover from

P.S. if this helps there was no blood an he swam away

As long as you didn't tear any of the membranes in the gill, you shouldn't have to worry too much.  That pink stuff in the gill plates is very sensative, I'm told, but otherwise, a small hook scar shouldn't kill it.

I just fished a tournament a day or two ago and we caught one 5.0lbs, hooked deep in the mouth with both trebles of a rat-l-trap in its gills.  When putting the fish on the board to measure (20 inch limit) id never seen so much blood come out of a fish into my boat and all over the board.  A minute after he was in the livewell he was belly up, but my partner kept "messing" with him, standing him back up strait and pushing water through the gills. (I also put an extra aerator in with it) After about a half an hour of care the fish was back to staying upright on his own.  By the time we weighed in over and hour later, it swam around in the tournament holding tank, and was released to swim off.  To me I always thought a bad gill hook was the end of a bass, but I think if u give him highly water highl saturated with air and a little TLC it can sure help.  Moral of the story... Dont give up right away on your fish!!!

Keep a bottle of  mountain dew in the boat next time you have a bleeder pour some on the wounded area the blood will clot  immediatly.  I have this in a  BASS Conservation Power point presentation. It works.

That mountain dew trick sounds interesting, but how are the fish affected in the long run? It seems like those chemicals may have adverse affects on the bass. I mean, that stuff is bad enough for humans...
