Question for Guides....

Featured Replies

How much tackle do you carry when you take out 2 people? Which rods/reels? etc. What do you pack? How much tackle and rods do you need to guide fulltime? Any other tips or any info will be helpful.

If you dont guide or know what you are talking about please dont post.

I usually carry 20 rods on the boat at any given time. Tackle, I always carry 4 of each hard bait, cranks, spinnerbaits, topwater ect.

Plastic, The colors and brands that I use, I carry about 50 each and 250 of the most popular bait at that time of the season. Hooks, no less than 100 of each type that I use. Tube jig heads, I use 70% of the time, I carry about 500 mixed, 1/8 1/4 ounce in different hook styles (sickle, 570,630) I pour my own. Always have extra line. For guiding I don't use expensive rods and reels. A $40 setup is about max. No junk but cheap. you don't want the newbee droping your your quantum pti into the lake. 3 people in a boat and fishing gets messy esspecialy with novice anglers. A good lure retriever is essential. The key is to put clients on fish as fast as possible with the shortest amount of running. I usually ask if they want quality or quantity. That will tell me what they are expecting. Most guys just want to catch fish, even if they are just legal. you will get some guys that want a trophy and you have to be upfront with these clients about their chances, no guarantees. Most clients are beginners and want to learn, so teaching them without treating them like beginners is key. Make them feel equal no inferior.

I usually carry three to five rods for myself and my clients will bring (preferred) or I will provide three rods per a person. All that is needed to fish Lake Varner 99% of the time is three rods which are spooled with 8lb, 12lb, and 15lbor 17lb line. I have a 50 quart cooler (my tackle box) full of different baits incase they are needed and suggest my clients bring just the things that I think we will need for the trip which is usually just four or five different types of baits at the most. My boat is electric powered and 16 feet so I pack as light as I can and ask my clients to do the same when I take out two clients.

We have equipment if needed but we recommend that people bring what they are comfortable with. Rods and reels are top of the line Shimano, (baitcaster: GBlank with Chronarch). We don't supply multiple rods: (it's not that difficult to retie baits.

We do not supply baits: we are a guide service, not a bait and tackle store. However, if we find something out of the ordinary that is working we will supply it. We do supply everyone with a list of baits to bring and recommend that they bring only enough to fish for the period that they will be here. As for baits that are presently working: Wal-Mart is right here and carries most everything.

If a client is using our rod and reel they are responsible for its well being. Break it or throw it in the lake and they own it.

im no guide yet but i work with a bunch of guides at hammonds fishing, one way to become guide is just make a name for your self and put your name on EVERY THING lol, and really know your stuff and entertain the clients, your clients will like you more if you dont catch any fish but entertain them and have a good time then catching a bunch of fish and be a ahole to them lol
