Chatterbait

Featured Replies

I would like to know from the guys that have fished this bait for a wile now what they suggest.

Retrieve speed

Way they retrieve it

Basically what they found works for certain condition

I have only fished this bait for a few days but have been trying a few different types of retrieves. The only bites I get are when I am burning it just above the bottom or a steady retrieve that still just makes the blade thump.  I got a couple new Swim Blades today in black/blue and another bluegill.  I read somewhere on the forum that when you dont feel the vibrations set the hook and I totally agree.  My first strike on the C-B was 5 ft from shore and I saw the bass hit it, but the second came from fishing offshore structure and I just felt the blade stop vibating and set the hook.  The strikes are hard and fast so be ready with a good hookset. I prefer the 1/2oz over the 3/8oz even in shallow water.  Tommorow I am going to a lake full of thick hydrilla to test the bait a little more.  Hopefully I will get a fatty and some more pics. Check my post in Outtings for some pics of my first two bass on a chatterbait.

It really depends on what mood the fish are in as to how you ought to retrieve the lure, but usually a steady medium retrieve will produce fish.  Also change Chatterbait weight according to the water depth, which would be heavier baits ( 1/2oz. ) in deeper water and lighter baits ( 1/4oz. or 3/8oz. ) in shallower water.

Well I have only been using the chatterbait for about a week now and had my first attempt at it at a comp we fished on Saturday. I must say I am very impressed by it. Got bag limit with in the first 30min of the comp but as temperature picked up the biting stopped as well. First cast retrieving it I felt the blade stopping and I the hook and bam. First fish.

The way I do it is to play around with dept in the shallow at the start. So air and water temp is still low. I will cast the bait close to shore or structure. And then play around with it. Couple of jerks and then retrieve. Or just a steady slow retrieve. But I want to get the chatterbait to jump around like the video they have on the chatterbait site.

Any opinion you guys mite have will be appreciated. The more info I can get the better

First of all I have found that these lures work best in grass -- not so good around brush piles, standing timber or laydowns.  Secondly, I have had by best luck when using what I call (others disagree) a horizontal yo-yo retrieve (pull on the lure, get it chattering and let it fall).  Usually the fish will hit on the the next pull.  But a medium retrieve also works well especially if there is a chop on the water.  I know of guys who simply fish them like jigs (let 'em fall to the bottom and hop 'em up) but I have not had much luck using that method.

I like the original rad lure chatterbait.

It has been "the" lure for me more than once.

I like the heavier 1/2 oz. models.  because I have my best luck with them fishing a little deeper.

My most productive retrieve is to yo-yo it but don't let the blade stop vibrating except on the fall.

Great night bait in the darker colors.

If you have grass/weeds this can be the killer bait.

Try chartruese/white. - It is the standard

but I have scored big on virtually every color.

Good luck and have fun.
