ESTIMATING WEIGHT BASED ON LENGTH MEASURE

Featured Replies

I KNOW THIS IS PROBABLY ALREADY IN ANOTHER PLACE ON THE SITE BUT ANYONE KNOW THE FORMULA FOR ESTIMATING FISH WEIGHT BASED ON LENGTH.  WHENEVER I CATCH A DECENT FISH I USUALLY TAKE A QUICK PIC NEXT TO MY ROD OR SOMETHING ELSE FOR SCALE AND RELEASE.

I am not sure if you can get a good estimate just by length. If you use a tape measure and get the length and the girth measurments you can use a fish weight calculator like the one at the top of the page in the tackle box section. I stole a cloth measuring tape for sewing from the wife just for that reason. I do carry a scale as well. You can find the cloth sewing tapes at any sewing center or sewing supply store.

At the top of the page BassResource has a free fish weight calculator.  However, IMO weight estimate on length only is worthless.  I've used the calculator on fish i've weighed and it has been way off(like pounds).  Good thing is it is usually heavy ;D.  When I use the calculator with a length and girth measurement it is pretty accurate.

Bring a ruler and get the girth as well.Girth is one of the main factors in guessing weight of fish as well. Those cheap rope rulers work good.

IMHO the calculator "CAN" be off

I caught my PB about 3 weeks ago and measured the fish using fishing line. Took those measurements and put them into 2 different calculators(1 on this site and 1 on another site) Both times I entered the same dimensions, same style fish(Bass) and I got a different weight on each calculator. So I just added the 2 weights and divided by 2 to get an average.

On this site I got a weight of 5.9 lbs based on the dimensions I entered

On the other site it calculated 6.2 lbs

Added up and divided by 2  I get a weight of 6.05 lbs

A scale is the only true way to know those fish calculators are only for a estimation of weight they will never be exact.

Airborne, although no weight calculator will give you a dead on weight every time, ours is a little special.  Glenn took a normal fish calculator and modified it to be more accurate by narrowing it down to certain body types and then applying the correct formula for each as opposed to one formula for all so I guess I'm saying the one in the toolbox SHOULD be more accurate than most.

I tested it on a 5.2 last yr and it hit it pretty much dead on at 5.0- Close enugh for an equation of you ask me ;)

Everyone knows the best estimate of a bass's weight is length X girth + the year of your birthday divided by the number of bass you caught that day and add two pounds. At least this is how I estimate the weight of my catch.  ;)

I'm sure I have caught and released a couple of world records based on this estimate.  ;D

I have resorted to those silly scales a couple of times, but they are obviously wrong. They always measure way to light, if you ask me. LOL
