River Fishing and the Drought

Featured Replies

Anybody got any tips on fishing river pools(Smithland on the Ohio)during this drought. There is no current,it's hot as Haitis.Fish usually like to pull up on the shallow points and banks that have cover and feed. That's when there is current. It's really like the dead sea and there isn't much deep cover or structure to this pool.Just radical drops that go from 40 ft.-2 ft.Some vegitation back in the creeks but it's hard to get to.

Grass early in the morning, and I mean grass a little deeper like 6-8 feet and topwaters are good for river smallies. As the sun comes up, fish the dropoff into the main channel or the ends of points in the deeper water. Other than that, fish the main channel. Use your depthfinder to find underwater junk, boulders, ledges, etc. We have a stretch for example near my house that is running around 2-4 feet right now and there is a main river channel that runs about 14-17 feet full of ledges, rocks and gravel. This deeper channel only runs about a 100 yards or so but, you can pretty much be assured that you can pull out 25 or so smallies from this " ditch " everytiime you follow it. Tubes with a 1/4oz jighead thrown straight up river a head of you and allowed to sink and deadstick for a few minutes and then a steady, pop, pop off the bottom works well. The clearer the water the faster you want to work it back to you. It you work it too slow they tend to tail grab too much. Don't give them time to think about it. Make them bite. Just a example. :)---For me, this time of year, night time is the right time. Night fishing will tend to get the bigger smallies. Stay safe in the low water.

Try fishing swimming jigs on points in 6-8ft of water for largemouths, crank the wingdams early in the morning for smallies.
