Fishing in the Fog

Featured Replies

We've had heavy fog roll in the past few days and it's scheduled to continue for a few more days.  I've been wondering how the fog affects fishing, if it even does.

Any advice is appreciated.

I think it helps the fishing, at least in clear water. definitely cuts down on light penetration.

i love fishing in the fog. i fished in it yesterday and only got one bite, and I missed it, but she was HUGE. Topwater bites in the fog are sweet!

Around here I love it! In my area its a sure sign the mommas are out....Usually.This is also coming from someone who hates the sun and loves rain, clouds, fog, and gloom LOL.

Topwater time ;)

i dont think it does much at all, but like fourbiz said, if anything it will help because of less light.

just be sure not to run into anything in your boat  ;D

Fog extends the crepitscular periods of dusk and dawn, but makes boating more dangererous.  I welcome fog as long as not ina tournament.  Simply put it increases both the morning and the evening bite.  In the fall it can be a pitfall, the water never gets the sun it needs to warm and move the fish shallow.

Low light conditions, I look at it as a cloudy day. So topwaters and spinnerbaits.

**Also, learned the hard way, a GPS comes in handy so you can find the boat ramp. lol

One day that sticks out in my memory was this past summer, my brother and I went out at daybreak and there was a thick thick fog that didn't lift until 11.  The bite was better that day than any other day I've ever fished on that lake, and the topwater bite lasted until the fog lifted.  I believe the fog was a primary reason for that, so I'd say foggy days are generally gonna be better, especially during the summer.  Not sure about colder periods, but it may not be good if the fog keeps the sun from warming the water...  It does keep the pleasure boaters off the water til later in the day though  :)
