post spawn fish

Featured Replies

in ohio our fish have just entered post spawn.... the past saturday and sunday i fished a local lake and was skunked 2 days in a row. the first day i fished the dam ( a long rocky shoreline with a bite or two on a fat free shad) then went to the upper part of the lake this place is shallow and a **** ton of weeds i fished this area with a tube trying to find schools of fry and i saw several bass gaurding these schools of fry but i could not get theses fish to bite however tht may be me spooking them. i found shallow point by the ramp with alot of wood on it and i saw 2 fish just chilin and moving a little bit but i could not get them to bite my chigger craw.

my question is during this time of year where should the fish be and how should i be looking to catch them...are most fish gaurding fry close to shore or not also when you spot a fish on cover where do u place your lure in relation to it  . thanks in advance

I feel ya man! I had a really crappy time after they came off the spawn here in FL as well! I would suggest looking shallow in the morning and moving out a bit as the day goes by! If you can see them than they probably see/hear you as well. I would back off until you can't see them and make long cast running a reaction type bait by them(spinner, rat-l-trap). Or try a finesse presentation like a small Senko or a shaky head Trick worm. Move around a lot until you find them. BEST OF LUCK!!!!

I found some casting and ripping rattle traps on weed beds also had a few hits on a torpedo. over schools of bait fish

I have had moderate late morning success the last 2 weeks using Senkos in a variety of greenish colors in about 8 - 12 ft of water.  The lake has been clear to about 6 ft and we have had mostly overcast skies.  I am trolling primarily the western side of the lake around the obvious cover (trees & boulders) and quick drop-offs as well as the rocky points off the main channel.

Good Luck!

Ya here in Southern IL the spawn is basically over and after a HUGE post spawn bite they got lock jaw. My dad and I found it very hard to catch fish. We finally went in search of dirty shallow water with current. We found some in a area of our home lake we really hadn't taken much time to fish before. We found it to be great water to fish under blue bird skies and post spawn conditions. We also found some dirty water with lots of pads that produced some very big fish with a frog.

if you see bass guarding fry, throw a rage frog or a buzzbait. they kill topwaters trying to guard there fry. if there not hitting topwater try a swimbait or a jig. throw the bait near the fry and slow it down when its near the fry or the bass. then if that pattern does not work, then go back to the dam,  or where there shallow then deep water, and throw some crankbaits, jigs, and some soft plastics. fish them until you catch fish and when you do, keep casting in that general area.

if you don't catch anything don't give up. post spawn is the most difficult season to fish.
