strip pit after the rain

Featured Replies

headed to the big strip pit in so.Il. this weekend.. supposed to rain all week with highs in the mid to low 80's and lows at night in the mid 60's. with all the rain the water will most likely be a little on the muddy side knowing that the banks are real steep .. very little structure, a few points and coves and the dam area... how would you approach this knowing we are approaching fall as the nights are getting cooler, but with all the rain?  thanks  darren

When I fish the strip pits after storms I look for a drain pipe, or any other spot where water might be coming in. The fish you find there should be actively feeding so no need to finesse. A jerkbait or a spinnerbait would be my first choices.

The pit I normally fish is gin clear most of the year, but it will get a little stained after a good rain, that's when I switch from using natural colored baits to darker baits.

If you can't find any real structure, Weed edges almost always seem to produce something.

Try to get out Friday and Saturday if possible. Sunday is calling for bluebird skies in so. Illinois, and that can be a strip pit killer this time of year. My skunk beater on days like this is a gulp minnow on a dropshot rig along the weed edges.
