Everything to do with flipping

Featured Replies

Ok I am wondering what people use when flipping.  I use a Powell 7105, Revo Inshore, and 65# braid.  I am looking at Owner wide gap straight shank hooks, Mann's Sting Ray grubs and was wondering if any of you have any experience splicing a mono or fluoro leader?  Any suggestions or thought are appreciated.

if you're wonderin, here's my set up. A 30 year old Fenwick original 7.5' Flippin Stick. Ambassadeur 6001 w/ 20# Stren clear/blue. I''ve never put a grub on that set up, I always thought of them as weenie baits.99% of the time I've got a 1/4 or 3/8 jig on there, larger profile, more action, and can hold more scent. The other 1% of the time I've got a 10 or 12" worm hangin off it.

As far as any type of splice in the line, personally there's no way I'd ever do that. There's only 2 knots I want, one, a hundred yards deep in my spool, the other one on the jig. Splices and leaders have their purpose, but really don't have any business on a flippin stick doing close range battle.

If the water is that clear that you think you need a flouro leader, you shouldn't be flippin, you should be doin 20' pitches, or just plain old casting.  There ya go, those are my thoughts.

I use a shimano crucial with 50# power pro, and a black and blue jig

Thanks for the information guys.  I really enjoy reading what others are doing and their thoughts on it.  I am constantly learning and really appreciate the replies.

There are times I'll pitch a Zoom Fat Albert grub with a 1/0 hook  and a 1/4 oz sinker.  I like it because it acts like a small worm at the target, but a grub on the way back in.

I pitch much more often than I flip. The water is usually too clear on my local lakes in MN to do much flipping IMO, with the exception of flipping in heavy milfoil and coontail mats. I use a pair of G. Loomis flipping sticks for my pitching/flipping. One is a 7' 11" heavy power and one is 7' 5" med power. The heavier one is used for frogging and for punching slop mats with Texas Rigs and has #50 braid on it. The lighter one is used for general jig fishing and pitching and is spooled with #15 fluorocarbon line.
